Motorcycle Drive Chains
There are numerous parts on a motorcycle that are often overlooked and ignored. Your motorcycle drive chain is not one of these items. This is the part that often has the job of transferring all of that engine power to the rear wheel, so making sure it is in good working order is a common point of interest. Not to mention that your motorcycle chain can be your best friend or your worst enemy depending on how you maintain it. If you have ever had one snap and reach out and touch the back of your calf, or worse your engine case, you know what I am getting at.
This is a part that is often under a tremendous amount of strain, so making sure you are using a quality motorcycle drive chains and you are making sure it is properly lubed and in good working condition is a good practice.
Types of Motorcycle Chains
Over the years custom motorcycle drive chains have been developed to maintain a certain level of strength and longevity. There are a variety of developments concerning the lubrication of the chain using various methods to seal the links.
One method is to use the O-rings to go between the links and seal the link to keep contaminates like water, dirt out. This enables the chain to stay lubricated and adds a good amount of longevity to your motorcycle drive chain. These seals come in different styles and names like X-ring or Y-ring chains. These terms refer to the types of seals all performing the same function. Keep the dirt and water out. The down-side to the sealed chains is they do rob a little power from the bike.
The other method is non-sealed chains, they perform a little better because they move more freely, but they need proper lubrication more often than a sealed motorcycle drive chains.
