In order for your motorcycle gearbox to last, you need to keep it in good condition. This can be done with proper maintenance, and by using a good quality motorcycle gearbox oil.

Why is a motorcycle gearbox important?

Your motorcycle gearbox has to the job of giving your motorcycle the ability to shift. The gears inside are constantly turning with the motorcycle engine which means there is a considerable amount of friction in the transmission case. All of this friction creates a lot of heat, and without proper maintenance and the use of a good motorcycle gearbox oil, your transmission can fail.

For example, a Harley Davidson® Sportster® has the transmission and primary combined. This means the fluid has to perform the cooling function without causing problems with friction. Motorcycle clutches need friction in order to work properly. Having a fluid that prevents friction can cause your clutch to slip, and this is not ideal.

Now other Harley Davidson® Motorcycles have the primary separated from the transmission. This means the transmission fluid does not have to allow friction. Oils for the Harley® transmission are created to cool and eliminate as much friction as possible.
