What does the Choke on a Motorcycle do?

Your motorcycle choke knob has a very simple function. It operates a valve that restricts airflow to your carburetor. This is why it is called a “choke”. When you restrict airflow to the carburetor, it creates a gas rich environment which is beneficial for starting an engine, especially when it is cold. 

A motorcycle with the choke on?

It is a common issue for motorcycles that have been in storage for a long period of time to start but not run with the choke off. The reason for this is because the jets in the carburetor are clogged and are not allowing enough gas in for the engine to run. When you partially close the choke, you can somewhat resolve the problem, until the motorcycle throttle is opened up. So, when you hear someone say their bike will only run with the choke on, you know what the deal is in most cases.

Carbureted Engines and Choke Knobs

Motorcycle choke knobs can be found on the side of the carburetor, or sometimes they are actuated via a lever that is mounted on the handlebars. Most carbureted engines will have a choke knob somewhere. Even many lawn mowers and small engines have universal choke knobs.

If you are used to riding older bikes, you tend to look for the choke knob right away. It’s just something you get used to using when you start the bike. Pull the choke knob and start the bike. Let the engine warm up and push the choke knob back in. Even some modern bikes with fuel injection have a type of choke knob, but they are not all that common.
