What is a muffler baffle?

A motorcycle muffler baffle is an insert that is put into a motorcycle muffler. The baffle is usually a round piece of pipe that has holes punched or drilled through it. These holes are often angled allowing air to pass through them in a specific direction.

How a motorcycle muffler baffle works?

In order to understand how a motorcycle muffler exhaust baffle works, you need to think about sound waves. Imagine looking into a pond and throwing a small stone in the center of the pond. When the stone hits the water, it produces numerous waves that expand from the center of impact. These represent sound waves. Now throw another stone into the pond and throw a larger stone a foot away from where the last stone hit. See how the waves collide and cancel each other out? This is how a baffle works.

The sound waves travel through the exhaust pipe and are directed into each other canceling a portion of the waves out. This reduces the sound level the motorcycle produces while providing a certain amount of backpressure the engine needs to perform properly.

While reducing the sound levels, motorcycle baffles and motorcycle mufflers also allow you to control the tone of the exhaust. Most people prefer a deep, low bellowing tone vs a high, “tin” sounding rattle.
