How to Choose the best Motorcycle Motorcycle Sprockets
Your motorcycle sprockets are the parts that delivers the power from your engine to the rear wheel. Your front motorcycle drive sprocket, often referred to as a counter sprocket, turns with your engine and is linked to a rear sprocket via your motorcycle chain. The power your motorcycle engine produces needs to be transferred to the rear wheel in order for your motorcycle to move.
How do I choose a motorcycle sprocket?
Depending on the amount of power your motorcycle engine is producing, you may need to change the material of the sprocket you are using so it can handle the strain without failing. A motorcycle sprocket is designed to be lightweight and strong. As the motorcycle chain pulls the sprocket teeth are engaged which turns the sprocket and the rear wheel. As long as the front counter sprocket and the rear sprocket are in alignment everything should run pretty smoothly.
Types of Motorcycle Sprockets What are motorcycle sprockets made of?
Custom motorcycle sprockets are usually made of steel or aluminum. Aluminum sprockets are used for some racing applications because they are lightweight and pretty strong. Aluminum motorcycle sprockets will wear much faster than steel sprockets, especially if the conditions are bad. If there is a lot of mud involved, a steel sprocket might be a better choice.
Steel sprockets are very strong and durable, but they are heavier than aluminum sprockets. They can handle a lot of tension delivered from the engine, and the teeth of a steel sprocket will wear much slower than an aluminum sprocket. The extra weight can rob a little horse power, but nothing that is really noticeable in most applications.
