Motorcycle Oil Filters and Things You Should Know
Are all motorcycle oil filters the same?
Your motorcycle oil filter is the gateway for the fluid that keeps your engine running. You might think all oil filters are the same, but there is a lot more to this vital engine part than you might think. Your motorcycle oil filters main job is to trap dirt and debris in your engine. As the oil flows through the engine, it passes through the oil filter.
Types of Oil Filter designs
The oil filter is made with a type of material that acts as a strainer. The motorcycle oil filter has been designed to allow a certain size of particles to pass through while it traps the larger particles. The particle size is measured in microns. For example, Harley Davidson® Twin Cam filters utilize a 10 micron material, while earlier models use a 20 micron material. The material is designed to trap these particles while allowing for enough oil flow so the engine can maintain a certain amount of oil pressure.
Reasons to change oil filters and oil
It is important to note that all engines produce a certain amount of debris. Friction wear particles and combustion byproducts are picked up by your motor oil as parts move. No matter what oil you use, you should always change your oil at regular intervals so you can keep a minimum amount of debris from running through your motorcycle engine.
Oil Filter Anti Drain back Valve
Another function of the oil filter you may not be familiar with is the anti-drain valve. Certain motorcycle engine oil filters require an anti-drain valve. This valve restricts the oil from flowing back into the tank. This helps retain some of the oil in the valve train for cold starts. This anti-drain valve is made of a rubber material and after time it will begin to harden and eventually, it will crack. This is another good reason why it is a good idea to change your oil and your oil filter at regular intervals.
