Different Types of Motorcycle Spark Plug Wires and The Best One for Your Motorcycle

There are a couple of different types of motorcycle spark plug wires for you to choose from. The motorcycle ignition switch you have determines which wires you should use. 

Spark Plug Wires for Older Vintage Motorcycle

Older vintage motorcycles use 7mm copper core wire and most modern motorcycles use 8mm suppressor core wire. 7mm copper core motorcycle spark plug wires use stranded copper core wire. Very similar to your typical stranded electrical wire you might find laying around the house. 

For older motorcycles with points and magnetos, this was the standard type of wire used. This wire is housed in a flexible cloth covered insulation to protect the wire and keep it for arching on the motorcycle engine and other metal parts.

Modern Motorcycle Spark Plug Wires

8mm suppressor core wire uses a carbon core center.  This is the typical standard for most modern motorcycles. Suppressor core wire was developed because copper core wire emits large amounts of RFI (radio frequency interference) which affects radios and onboard electronic systems. This is why suppressor core wire was introduced.
